Fujifilm X-E5 with Brightin Star 50mm f/0.95 Lens – Independent Review from Photographer Robin Bellmann

I received a Brightin Star 50mm f/0.95 lens from the company for testing—but I'm writing this blog post because I'm genuinely impressed with the lens, not because anyone asked me to.

I'm doing this out of conviction, because this lens surprised me: the silver version matches my Fujifilm X-E5 perfectly, has a high-end and harmonious look, and delivers impressive image quality that I'm very happy with.

🧭 Build Quality and Texture

To be honest, I was very impressed with the build quality of this lens.

Its texture is superb—all parts are made of metal, with nothing loose, and the focus ring operates smoothly and precisely.

The click of the aperture ring is also satisfying—clean and crisp, but not overly loud. Personally, I would have preferred a slightly louder click.

Weighing approximately 443 grams, it can be considered neutral: while it feels relatively heavy due to its metal construction, it still fits surprisingly well in the hand on the Fujifilm X-E5—even though its grip is quite small.

🌅 Image Quality and Portraits

I was truly amazed by its image quality.

Even at its maximum aperture, the Brightin Star 50mm f/0.95 produces beautiful, soft bokeh and excellent subject separation.

Of course, at f/0.95, its sharpness isn't perfect—but that's to be expected.

Even at f/2, this lens produces remarkably sharp images—even on the X-E5's 40-megapixel sensor.

This genuinely surprised me.

In backlit conditions, contrast drops noticeably, but it's precisely this drop that gives the lens its unique character—similar to the older Fujifilm 35mm f/1.4 lens, which many loved for its distinctive imaging style. The lens hood is integrated into the lens and can be pulled out; I personally don't like this design because I don't usually use the aperture.

The colors and subtle contrasts look very natural, and the image has that “analog” charm that perfectly matches the effect of film simulation.

🎯 Focus and Control

Like many manual focus lenses, this one requires some practice to master. Its long focus throw facilitates precise focusing.

Thanks to the X-E5's focus peaking function, focusing is not a problem—but you'll still need to consciously slow down, especially when shooting portraits with an aperture of f/0.95.

💡 Practical Experience

In daily use, the Brightin Star lens left a deep impression on me.

While pairing it with the compact X-E5 body and this large-aperture 50mm lens isn't exactly lightweight, the overall feel is balanced and of superior quality.

Especially in evening lighting, indoors, or creative portrait shooting, this lens truly embodies its design intent: creating atmosphere, showcasing depth of field, and shaping character.

For its price, the Brightin Star 50mm f/0.95 is definitely worth considering—if you're looking for a manual lens for Fujifilm, it's an exciting creative tool that's fun, inspiring, and relaxing.

✅ Conclusion

The Brightin Star 50mm f/0.95 lens isn't flawless, but it's undeniably soulful.

It feels solid in hand, the image quality from f/2 onwards is impressive, and its appearance is highly distinctive.

Those who enjoy manual focus and are looking for a unique lens will find this one excellent value. I'll definitely use it from time to time to capture those serene moments in nature.
